Bamboo scaffolds are typical in the fast growing mega cities of Asia. Visitors are impressed by their extreme heights up to 80 stories and their indigenous appearance.
Their advantages are their stability, the facile assembly and the low weight of the bamboo culms. Those scaffolds can, therefore, withstand strong typhoons.
For the exhibition ‘Ideal City - Real Projects, Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partner in China’ a bamboo sculpture was built by CONBAM in the foyer of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Germany.
The eight meter bamboo sculpture has the structure of a Chinese scaffold and stands as a gesture of friendship and as evidence of the typical local technical knowledge of the Chinese building sector.
The bamboo culms were tied with an original Chinese technique with plastic strips from Hong Kong. The structure was located in the north entrance of the Pinakothek during the exhibition in summer 2005.
